In the new-energy vehicle sector, demand for molds has surged by 40%, driving the iterative advancement of precision manufacturing technologies. A Dongguan-based company has developed nano-coated molds that triple the service life of molds, successfully gaining entry into Tesla’s supply chain. Moreover, liquid-metal mold technology has enabled hinge components for foldable smartphones to achieve an accuracy level of just 0.01 millimeters. Meanwhile, the penetration rate of 3D printing technology has exceeded 15%, allowing a major home appliance giant to shorten the development cycle for air-conditioner compressor molds by as much as 80%. These innovations have boosted China’s share in the global high-end mold market from 12% in 2020 to 28% by 2025.
Green intelligence sets a new benchmark for the industry.
Faced with pressure from the European Union’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), mold-making companies are accelerating their low-carbon transformation. DLC coating technology reduces demolding force by 52%, and a three-field coupling process boosts the tensile strength of polypropylene to 42 MPa. The Xiushui Industrial Park, through a shared platform, has integrated resources, enabling small and medium-sized enterprises to cut energy consumption by 25% and see their export orders grow by 87% year-on-year. Industry data shows that the adoption rate of environmentally friendly materials has risen from 45% in 2020 to 65%, though there still remains a gap compared to Germany’s 85%.
China’s Path in Globalized Competition
From January to April 2025, China’s mold exports reached US$8.013 billion, with the Southeast Asian market accounting for 35%. Through industry-academia-research cooperation, mold enterprises in Kunshan have achieved breakthroughs in standard-setting and are now involved in revising international standards such as ISO 9448. Companies like Tiangong International are expanding production of high-precision mold steels, and Xiangxin Technology saw a 25% increase in Q1 revenue, indicating an accelerating trend of domestic substitution. However, high-end sectors such as aerospace and chip packaging remain dominated by German and Japanese companies; China needs to continue making sustained efforts to master mirror-surface precision technology at or below 0.1 μm.
Outlook: As the "14th Five-Year Plan for Intelligent Manufacturing Development" is implemented in greater depth, the mold industry will undergo a digital transformation across the entire value chain—from design and production to service. By 2026, the market size is expected to surpass 500 billion yuan, with the adoption rate of AI simulation technology reaching 60%. This will truly usher in a transformative shift from being known as the "mother of industry" to becoming an "intelligent manufacturing engine."
